INTRODUCTION TO RHINE VALLEY

This place needs no introduction for wine lovers: the Rhine Valley is the ultimate place to savour a drop or two. But the history of the Rhine goes so much deeper than just the wine industry: once an important strategic spot for the Roman Empire, this beautiful valley is dotted with Roman ruins. Check out the fort they left behind in Boppard, before reading up on their influence in the region at the Roman-Germanic Central Museum in Mainz. Soak up the architectural sights of this great city by going gothic-cathedral hunting – we’re sure you’ll find more than one or two.

But let’s be real: the main architectural attraction of the Rhine Valley is its many castles and forts. Something straight out of a Disney movie, the be blown away by the sheer number of castles you’ll see and explore on a trip to the Rhine Valley. Visit the hilltop-wonder that is Marksburg Castle in the town of Braubach before uncovering the stories hidden in Castle Maus.

While much of the activity of the Rhine Valley is concentrated in Germany, this region also spans across France, Switzerland and Luxembourg. Between these four, you can bet that there’s been a bit of biff over the years. Learn more about the political history of the Rhine Valley at the Three-Countries Museum in Lörrach, Germany.

With the perfect climate for wine-making, enjoy a bottle or two (or ten) of Riesling in the Moselle wine country. While its expert winemakers will have no trouble pointing you to their best bottles, it’s the food that goes with it that’s probably more mysterious. Go beyond just schnitty and chips and try some traditional German fare. Between Himmel und Erde and Pfälzer Saumagen, you’ll probably have enough culinary adventures to last you a lifetime.

See, do and drink it all in the beautiful Rhine Valley, Germany.
