EAT LOCAL

It’s hard to think about the USA & Canada without thinking about food. Fresh New Orleans gumbo, pastrami laden New York bagels, decadent Canadian Poutine - when it comes to food, this corner of the world doesn’t mess around. As well as breakfast included most days of your trip, our food focus in the USA & Canada is all about flexibility and local flavours, so you can create your own foodie odyssey. It’s all part of our Munch food philosophy.

Gus' Fried Chicken is at the top of my little black book of foodie hotspots to take the Contiki Fam to in Memphis. It's world famous. and a local tradition. It has a simple All-American aesthetic with red checkered tablecloths and neon signs, and a mouthwatering menu of chicken thighs, chicken breasts, macaroni and 'slaw that's seriously delicious. It's a real taste of Memphis, and the perfect crispiness, spiciness and succulent juiciness makes fine dining seem kind of pointless.

There’s no better way to get the full Louisiana experience than by learning exactly how some classic New Orleans dishes are made. Meet a lively local chef and learn how to prepare some Creole classics like gumbo and jambalaya. The smells are incredible, but the best part of all is digging into these vibrant creations with a glass of sweet ice tea.

When we visit FareStart’s flagship restaurant in Seattle, it’s about more than its award winning food. It’s also about its incredible mission: using the restaurant’s revenue to create job training programmes that ultimately help to alleviate hunger, poverty and homelessness in the local community. As well as training disadvantaged young people with vital, real-world skills, FareStart prepare meals for schools, shelters and daycare centres, all while eliminating waste, creating community value and transforming lives.
