What are Free Time Add-Ons and can I pay on credit card?

Free Time Add-Ons are special activities Contiki organizes in addition to the trip. They aren’t mandatory (but we do highly recommend them!) and can be done during your free time. Payment for Free Time Add-Ons can only be made in cash, using the local currency - Thai Baht. You can check out the prices on the trip page of the website. Payment will generally be collected on night one after kickstart.

Please note: Contiki FTAs may vary due to seasonal conditions & often require minimum guest participation to operate. FTA prices are preferential & are subject to change without notice.

When should flights be booked from Phuket on the last day of the trip?

We’ll aim for you to arrive back in Phuket by early afternoon on the final day. Just one catch - Thai traffic is notoriously slow, so this is dependent on traffic conditions. So, we recommend that you book flights only after 14:30 on the final day. Booked a flight before that? You’ll have to organize your own transfer back to Phuket. Let your Trip Manager know on Day 1 so they can help you out.

Can a passenger get a transfer from Sawaddi Patong to the airport later?

Yep, you can book private taxis through the reception of Sawaddi Patong Resort or use taxi apps. It’ll cost approx. 850 Baht & will take around 1 hour.

Where does the transfer back to Phuket end up?

You can choose to have the van take you to the Start hotel – Sawaddi Patong Resort. Or directly to Phuket airport. Just let your Trip Manager know!

Do I need a visa to travel to Thailand?

Your visa requirements can change depending on your citizenship. Check out our handy Visa Guide to get the latest info.

What should I pack for this trip?

Other than all the standard stuff like jeans, trousers, jumpers and t-shirts, here are some things you should consider packing:

• Rainproof jacket

• Comfy walking shoes & sandals

• Swimwear & towels

• Personal medication & motion sickness tablets

• Travel adaptors

• Insect repellent and sunscreen

• Smart casual clothing for high-end restaurants or night clubs in Phuket

Are there any luggage restrictions for this trip?

On our trips, you can bring one bag or suitcase of 73cm x 50cm x 25cm (29” x 20” x 10”), with a max weight of 20kg (44lbs). Please note you’ll be responsible for getting your luggage on and off the public ferries at each island.

What is the currency used in Thailand?

Thailand uses the Baht. (No USD accepted here!). ATMs & Cash Machines are usually readily available in Thailand.

What is the voltage in Thailand?

Thailand has 220V, 50Hz electricity. Wall outlets are usually the round, 2-pin type, although some fit two flat blades. So don’t forget your adapters!

What are the local customs in Thailand?

The locals in Thailand are generally very friendly and are quite used to tourists. But there are some things you should keep in mind while travelling in Thailand:

  • Revealing clothing worn off the beach is usually considered culturally insensitive. Shorts are generally fine (as long as they aren’t too short).
  • Smoking is common in Thailand, and most restaurants & bars will have a smoking zone.

  • Public displays of affection between men & women are considered shocking in some places. On the other hand, it’s perfectly normal for a pair of men or a pair of women to link arms or hold hands.

  • Try to learn some of the local language – but remember there are often many different dialects to choose from! Your Trip Manager or Local Guide can give you some tips on words you can try.

Can I buy a SIM card in Thailand?

You can buy a SIM card or a handset at any mobile phone shop and some convenience stores. ‘Top up’ credit vouchers are available at most phone shops, local post offices or at the airport for around US$10-15. Most areas have 4G coverage, but major cities will have 5G.

What is the tipping culture in Thailand?

Tipping is quite common in all areas of the service industry in Thailand. So, feel free to leave a tip if you love the service – even your Contiki Team!

Everything about Contiki is deeply rooted in our two values ‘Make Every Moment Count’ and ‘We’re About People’. We don’t just talk, we walk the walk and live by our brand philosophy of ‘Travel.Together.’ which means to travel with one another, with the destinations we visit, the people and cultures we enjoy and the environment.

How many other travellers are on each trip?

Group sizes are completely dependent on where and how you choose to travel with Contiki.

In Europe and in most of North America and New Zealand, group sizes can range between 24 – 53 awesome travellers.

In regions like Asia, Australia, Africa and Latin America, and on some North America and New Zealand trips, our group sizes are considerably smaller – as low as 12 or up to 30 travellers max.

Detour trips offer a different type of experience and max out at 16 people led by a local host.

Wondering what is so great about travelling together? Check out the Contiki Social travel page.

Each group is administered according to our strict Covid policies which can be viewed here.

Can I book online?

You certainly can! All of our trips are available to book online, just select your preferred travel date(s) and away you go. You can also book over the phone if you'd prefer.

What’s included?

All essential trip elements have been catered to ensure a great time, with great people in great places. But you mean more specifically right?

Your accommodation, essential trip transport, and a good handful of meals are included in the cost of your Contiki trip (on most trips we offer breakfast every day, plus a hand-picked selection of authentic and tasty meals).

To fill your days and Insta feeds we have Included Experiences, which are basically the sights and activities we think you just can’t afford to miss. Of course you also get our expert and highly trained team of Contiki staff to support throughout.

A day by day breakdown of inclusions and Free Time Add-Ons are available on the trip specific pages.

We always try to accommodate special requests such as birthdays, proposals etc. Please chat to our team and we can explore how we may support the request.

What’s not included?

Contiki social travel trips have a large degree of flexibility built into them to enable you to truly own your experience. This means that some trip elements are not included in the initial cost and may require additional budgeting.

Flights to and from your starting and ending points are not included in the cost of your trip. These can be added on during the booking process either online or via our contact center or booked independently by you.

Each trip contains the right amount of free time for you to explore or indulge your travel desires. We offer Free Time Add-Ons, which are additional experiences that are not included in the overall price. These add ons are highlighted on the specific trip page. Your Trip Manager will highlight these to you and organise their booking on trip. Exceptions may apply where pre booking is required but this will be made known to you in your pre departure information.

A number of meal times are left open for you to explore a region and its foodie offerings in greater detail, so budgeting for your taste in non-catered meals is important.

Travel insurance and visas are also not included in the cost of your trip, and should be booked separately.

What are Contiki's sustainability credentials?

Travel comes with responsibilities. That’s why we’re determined to travel sustainably and consciously, and that’s why we’re willing to take a stand on issues closest to our hearts. Find out more details here.

With the help of our four-point Climate Action Plan, we're now on a journey to Net Zero - committing to carbon reductions and evolving to support the transition to a low-carbon future.

Find out more details here.
