More About Me

My name is Louise, I live in Western Sydney and I am going on my very first Contiki trip in 7 weeks :). It's the May 29th Grand Northern, so excited. So describe myself... Well I'm a fairly easy going fun loving 22 year old. I have two dogs (border collie and labrador retriever) and I love being outside whenever I can. I've had the travel bug since my last overseas trip six years ago (wow, it doesn't seem that long), when I went to Italy and France for just over three weeks. I wouldn't say that I'm your average 22 year old woman either, I try to set an example for people and show them they can do whatever they put their minds to, no matter how difficult it seems. I am an amateur photographer and I hope to become semi professional eventually lol... I have a list of things to do before I die, which I intend to stick to, which includesa whole lot of little things, but then the usual things you would see on a list like bungee jumping and whole lot of other things that you may not usually consider on a list lol. Whether I do all of it or not, I like to think it gives me something to achieve. I love meeting new people and making friends and just having a good time. I would say I'm a bit of nature girl, as I love being outside, being around animals, but at the same time I like to be alone, taking photos and just appreciating what's around me I guess. All in all, I would really just say that I'm a loyal friend, who loves to have fun, but at the same time experience new cultures and experiences. I like all sorts of music, but especially Unwritten Law and Bon Jovi, and along with photography, I also like to make my own movies, and play around with film editing.

  1. I know that there are some great across the shoulder bags you can get now that double up as a camera bag (if you have a DSLR or a video camera) and have space for a wallet and phone, and they are incredibly handy, but a day pack is really the way to go. I used a back pack when I went to Europe a few years ago, and I was able to take a bottle of water, camera, wallet, etc and not have to worry about it. It may seem like a slight inconvenience to have to get your bag off to get yur wallet out, but you feel more secure and it’s more comfortable.

  2. Are there certain rules about what sort of prescription drugs you can bring into the states? Or pain-relief medication such as Nurafin or Panadol?

  3. I went to Italy and France a few years ago for 24 days and what I found was helpful was rather than literally pack an outfit for everyday, I packed a handful of durable handy clothes (eg, three tops, a couple of tees, oen pair of light weight denim jeans, one pair of light weight pants, two skirts and a pair of cargos / capris) and took my own washing powder and liquid to wash my own clothes (usually in the hotel bathr tub lol) after I had worn them. I didn’t use a public laundry once, my suitcase remained fairly light weight and I always had clean clothes to wear. The only downside with taking jeans for example is that they take a very long time to dry completely. If you were really game, you could risk not washing them for the whole trip (but I don’t know if I would do that again), or if you are on a tour and arrive in a place where you are staying more than one night, you can wash them at the start and you can be sure they will be dry by the time you leave for the next place. Take as little as possible, just your favourite tees, one good hoodie (because over the head jumpers or hoodies are much harder to take on and off if you get hot), and lots and lots and LOTS of underwear and socks lol. That way, your suitcase stays nice and light, leaving room for anything you buy and is still under the airline weight restrictions.

  4. Also, I found that even though I had enough in my savings account to pay it all off at once, I paid off the airfares first, then all the extra little thing like the pre-tour and post-tour accom, airport shuttle transfers and the insurance one at a time so that I would still earn the highest amount of credit interest in my account as I could. And in addition to that, I also made sure I could deposit at least $50 still to my “holiday” money so that it didn’t seem like it was just disappearing. My trip is fully paid off, and in the remaining weeks before I go away I can still keep adding my minimum deposit to my money to keep it growing and still have money when I get back.

  5. yeah it has been difficult, but I have managed to cut back on a lot of menial things – $10 doesn’t sound like alot, but it adds up if you spend it here and there on things you necessarily don’t need right away. I have found myself unemployed as well, so it is possible to put money in your savings, but also pay for a trip at the same time. Movie nights are an awesome idea especially if people bring movies from their own collection that way you don’t even need to rent :) sounds like I’m cheap, I know, but it all works lol.
