My Recent Comments

  1. South East Asia has a wide array of tropical fruits. Certainly try the durian{its best eaten together with a glass of chrysenthenum tea}, cempedak,nangka-(jackfruit),longan,starfruit, mangosteen, duku langsat, chiku, rambutan, pisang emas.

  2. On the nile cruise consider trying the local Egyptian selection which typically consists of, Koshari, Taamiya, Bamiyya, Molokhiyya, Fuul, and for dessert Baklawa. The local Stella beer is also good and also try the Karkade (hibiscus) tea for refreshment.

  3. A money pouch for the Egyptian currency its easier to use for the constant tipping of services.
    - As the notes are really old and dirty. You would not like to have this currency in your favourite wallet/purse.

  4. Its fully airconditioned and cleaner regularly.Aviod buying any drinks on the train as it is severly overpriced.

  5. With regards to the overnight train in Egypt, it is the First Class cabin sleeper train that is used. Once the sleeper bunks are erected its quite cramped and hence its important to carry a small suitcase or a backpack.

There is a small sink in the compartment but the toilets are a unisex communal-non water type. Would avoid the food provided as its not that safe to consume on the train. Its probably best to bring some energy bars from home.
Also some really strong whiskey /alcohol for the trip will actually help out as it will act as a tranquiliser. It can get rocky initially but once you get used to it is actually very pleasant and feels like a massaging bed.

  6. For Egypt its 220V with 2 prong rounded – like in Europe.

  7. It maybe worthwhile to include a mini maglite torch 1 AAA cell with loop, 1 pair of compact travel binoculours as well.

Convertible trousers are also ideal where you would have the option of long or short.

With regards to clothing the colour is also quite important. The country is quite dusty/dirty and hence white clothes will really show it.Black will really absorb the heat and will add to the discomfort. Ideally Khaki and Green for daytime. Green coloured clothing is also great for minimising attention in bazaars as it is the islamic colour. Anyone wearing green would indicate that they are open minded to islamic principles and beliefs. Traders and general population tends to be a little more respectful.

Sunglasses are a necessity and ideally Oakley sports style with side protection to minimise dust interefernce.

Hats of the Akrubra style wide brimmed would provide better shade rather than caps.

Prior to going there I would recommend immunity building via increased consumption of beneficial probiotic foods like yogurt and yakult. Whilst there use travelan to prevent food poisoning and upset stomachs. If that does occur use a local medication called Entocid which is specifically formulated for those conditions. Foreign medication will work but it will take 2-3 days to fully recover whereas Entocid has an almost immediate effect.

  8. Zadar has the best Maraskino( cherry liquer) and slivovica (plum brandy) in all Hrvatska. Its also a good base for sailing the northern Dalmatian islands

  9. Have a walk on the Dubrovnik Zid- Walls of Dubrovnik . Its the best way to get an overview of the entire city.
Have an sladoled(ice cream) in the Stradun and try to soak up the atmosphere.
Great base for sailing through the Adriatic as well
