Amsterdam, or as I refer to it “Disneyland for adults” is like no other place in Europe. Although this city is best-known worldwide for its unorthodox economy, there are many alternative characteristics Amsterdam possesses that may not be visible to the naked eye.
Morning
Before venturing forth with stereotypical activities associated with Amsterdam, use the daylight to explore the many “conventional” attractions the city offers.
Begin the day avoiding the massive lines with a 9:00 a.m. visit to the Anne Frank House (Adults €7.50). During the somber walking tour of the Frank family’s hideaway, take a moment and place yourself in the dreary confines Anne was subjected to on a daily basis from July 1942 to August 1944 during Nazi occupation. Could you hold the same consistent positive outlook Anne did considering these circumstances? This visit certainly will be the most inspirational excursion during your stay.
Afternoon
For lunch walk down bustling Damarak Street for a bite to eat at Tivoli’s Pizzeria for a jam-packed calzone or a variety of other Italian selections. Conveniently located next door is Amsterdam’s renowned Sex Museum, the first and oldest in the world. Guaranteed you’ll never have so much fun wandering around a museum considering the eye catching exhibits, just be careful where you sit.
Evening
Within walking distance of the Red Light District is a trendy Belgian restaurant tucked away from tourists called Lieve (88 Herengracht St.). Experience dining at its best with the unique opportunity to select entrÈe’s from three different dinner menus.
Finally, after a big day of culturally enriched sightseeing, treat yourself (in more ways than one) by exploring the Red Light District.
Morning
Start the morning off with a hearty breakfast and some espresso at the CafÈ de Jarden (Nieuwe Doelenstraat 20-22). With some of the best canal views in Amsterdam this is a popular spot to satisfy your hunger and collect your thoughts as you take in the scenery. Sit on the patio use your time to journal or write a postcard home! Next, head to the Heineken Experience (Syadhouderskade 78) for 10€ you get entrance into the “experience”, 3 beers and a take home glass -you can’t beat that. You also learn how this popular beer is made through some cool videos and demonstrations. It is somewhat touristy but a must while you’re in Amsterdam.
Afternoon
During the afternoon why not rent a bicycle (www.macbike.nl) with your mates and peddle to the Museum Quarter for some first-rate shopping and possibly even a museum visit exploring the works of Dutch painter Vincent van Gogh. Alternatively, ask about the optional canal cruise. Cruising the canals of Amsterdam not only shows the city from a different perspective but is also a relaxing alternative which (more than likely) will be necessary for your big night ahead.
Evening
Sinners (Wagenstraat 3-7) is an excellent club to regroup with tour buddies and kick-off the evening’s festivities. It’s best to dress to impress as you take in all types of music including Techno, Rap and R&B in this 3 story club. Those who don’t plan on wearing their dancing shoes can sit back and enjoy the scenery of good looking people or listen in on the ridiculous conversations your friends will surely partake in. Sinners is impressive and well worth a few extra bucks for your last night in Amsterdam!
As the evening comes to an end there’s no better time to wander the neon-illuminated streets during the busiest working hours of the day (enough said). If your sweet tooth hasn’t already been filled, indulge in a toasted chocolate covered Belgian waffle, a local favorite and a great midnight snack for an overzealous tourist.
