If you choose to use travellers cheques try to arrange them in Australian Dollars in A$20 and A$50 denominations as they can be cashed almost anywhere. Travellers cheques in foreign currency can be cashed most readily at banks, banks in Australia however are closed on the weekends.
Make a note of your travellers cheque numbers, leave a copy at home and carry a copy separate from your cheques in case of loss or theft.

A tip for people looking for a decent coffee shop.. if you don't already know about it, you will because most Contiki travellers find out about it - its The Grasshopper. Ask a local and they should be able to tell you where to find it.
Take 50€ and put it somewhere safe, your suitcase, your travel documents, wherever. This way you'll have it just in case.
