Firstly, the took that flight because it was considerably less expensive and the Queen is attempting to invest as little as possible during these tough economic times.
I do not know the solider protocol, but I can say for certain that it is as much as the person individual how they act when first meeting a royal (even though everyone would bow or curtsy to the Queen), individuals can choose to curtsy or bow grandly, do nothing or anything in between. Americans are notoriously over-the-top (no offence to the Americans, but you’ve a track record of being so), that is most likely why they bowed and curtsied so grandly.

the eco lodge is SO fun, its kinda like a apartment with about 10-12 ish people in each cabin! make sure you head over to the dingo bar!
I had trash bag, the bigger ones, and used them to separate my dirty clothes from my clean clothes in my suitcase...
