You can get money refunded to you when you make purchases over $300 AU when shopping in Australia.
The refund system is called the ‘Tourist Refund Scheme’ and allows you to claim the Goods and Services (GST – effectively 9.1%) tax back as long as you buy the goods less than 30 days before departure and take them with you when you leave Australia.
You need to show the item(s) plus the receipt(s) at the ‘TRS’ (Tourist Refund Scheme) desk in the departure lounge of the airport that you fly out of.
You should carry the items with you and also allow a little extra time before departure to take care of the paper work. The refund payment can be made by either cheque, credit to an Australian bank account, or as a payment to a credit card.
