Mackay
Last Updated: Oct. 20, 2007
Mackay, on the East Coast Australia, was founded as a port to export wool, but eventually found its density in sugar cane. Sugar was first planted here in 1865 and the city has now become the pre-eminent Australian sugar district producing one third of all the sugar in Australia. Due to a hue nearby mining operation the city is also one of the fastest growing in Queensland.
Mackay is a one night stop on many Contiki Tours visiting the east coast of Australia traveling either north from Rockhampton and the Capricorn Coast or south from the Whitsunday Islands.
