Many flights from Australasia and America land in London between 0600 and 0900. You cannot check into the hotels until 1400 generally so a hop-on hop-off bus tour is a great way to kill some time while you wait for your room and good for your body clock to adjust to UK time

Some other suggestions, although not necessary - Travel pillow, chewing gum (especially for those who have ear problems during flight), book and/or ipod and one change of clothing (air lines do lose luggage occasionally)
...Italy is an amazing experience... and not comparable to anything else!
This is a FANTASTIC tour for a city person. The shopping, dining, nightlife, and cultural opportunities are limitless as each city seems to outshine the last.
