Do yourself a favor: as soon as you enter the city, leave your inhibitions at the border! There are things on menus at restaurants in New Orleans you would never have thought to cook up, but in the Big Easy, gumbo (a type of stew), jambalaya (a rice dish served with various meats), po’ boy and muffaletta sandwiches are a way of life.
Travel on down to Mulate’s near the Convention Center for great Cajun and Creole fare, including fried frog legs, ‘gator tail and country style catfish!!
Cafe du Monde is a must for a sampling of the flare New Orleans has to offer; they only have two things on their menu—beignets (which are French style doughnuts dusted with powdered sugar) and cafe au lait.
There’s no reason to go to New Orleans without going to Bourbon Street while you’re at it. Be sure to try at least one Hurricane at Pat O’Brien’s, one of the oldest watering holes in the city, famous for the drink featuring rum, fruit juice and a cherry on top. Brace yourself — it’ll hit you like a hurricane!
