Amsterdam is one of the most multicultural cities in Europe, you will find a wide range of foods in the city from Turkish kebabs to Indian, Italian and Chinese. The Dutch are perhaps most well known for eating chips and mayonnaise, but steaks, ribs and home-style meals with loads of vegetables are popular throughout the city. Febo is also popular among many Dutch.

Perhaps enjoy a pancake or maybe even munch out on a doughnut (which the Dutch claim to have invented). In the many of the city’s cafes (as opposed to coffee shops) you can fill up on pofferjies (mini-pancake’ish Dutch specialties), croquets and stroopwaffels while on the street you can also find raw herring.

Cheese is also very popular among the Dutch with the most well known being the Edam and Gouda varieties. Many tours visiting Amsterdam for two or more nights will visit a cheese and clog farm where you can see how these tasty local products are made.

The liquid refreshment the Dutch are most famous for is Heineken beer and a visit to the Heineken Experience at the Heineken Brewery is a highlight for many beer lovers. Amstel and Grolsh beers also well known Dutch beer exports. Jenever is a strong Dutch-style gin that is usually consumed as an aperitif before a meal while contrary to popular belief, Absinthe is not widely available in the city.

  1. When you go the Heineken brewery, you can create a video of yourself and email it to your friends. It’s a nice way to show your friends and family at home what you’ve been up to.
