Amount for transit visa to UK app. R700 but major problems if you have a parent from UK or Europe and are eligible for dual nationality.
Total money spent on obtaining a UK visa in South Africa R2400.
(Hopefully awaiting refund of R1000 for my mistakes)Amount for the French Schengen visa app. R700. no ptoblems there :D

The UK Border Agency in South Africa refused to give me a visa on my South African passport since I am eligible for dual nationality. The only problem is that my registration as an Italian Citizen at the Italian Consulate in Johannesburg has been unsuccessul so far and the verification process will take at least three months. So, now I have to apply for a visa from the UK Embassy again and repay the fees.
...I wish obtaining visas and passports could have been easier…
Oh, the passport issue is real… just to get an unabridged birth certificate from South African Home Affairs takes you like two years.

Word of advice to South African travellers… do not make bank transfers into the British High Commission’s bank account, I just made that mistake and possibly lost out on like R700. They only accept cash deposits :(

Recent Tips
Make sure you try currywurst in Germany. It's basically a hot dog with tomato sauce (ketchup) and curry powder. Tastes brilliant and only costs 1 or 2 Euro.
If you have a high-def video camera, be sure to take it on a hike with you to the bottom of the canyon. HD is the only way to bring out the gorgeous contrast of blue sky and red rock that you'll want to show everyone at home.
MOMA is well worth a visit, and if you're short on cash, has free entry between 4pm-8pm on Friday nights. It does get very crowded though...
